How I Went From Unemployed and $70,000 In Debt to Making $142,436 a Year and Owning Three Homes

Upon graduation from college, I had $60,000 in student loans and $10,000 in credit card debt. I’d learned some beginning job skills, but the only jobs I could find were entry level jobs paying $25,000 a year. In an area where the average home cost $450,000 (now $850,000) and the average rent for an apartment ran $1,200 a month, a salary of $25,000 a year would not provide enough money to pay my rent, let alone eat! After three months of a fruitless job search and increasing credit card bills, I moved back home, dejected and ashamed that I could not make it in the real world. I felt like such a failure as I unpacked my stuff and realized that even with all my education, I was back at home, living with my parents.

In that moment of shame, I promised myself that I would do whatever it might take to get a high paying job so I would never be in that situation again. I continued my job search from home and set out to determine what was missing in my skill set. What had college left out?

I went on job interview after job interview, each one with rejection or poverty-level pay. With each rejection, I questioned my interviewer: Why had I not been chosen? I set out to fill the gaps by taking continuing education courses. Within two months of taking some extra classes and networking like crazy with working professionals, I had my first job, paying $26,500 a year. It was not enough to move out of my parents’ house, but it was enough to start paying off my credit card debt and make my student loan payments. I felt proud of my achievement and determined to make myself more desirable to better employers.

I took a number of marketing and sales classes at online universities and learned how to sell products. Then I had a realization: I was learning how to market and sell everyone else’s products; why not apply it to myself and my own career? I immediately put the principles I learned into practice and within three months I had a job offer paying me $57,000 a year!

My marketing and sales experience grew and I learned new, innovative ways of marketing myself. I took even more classes on sales, marketing and the Internet. Within six months, I negotiated to have my salary raised to $75,000.

I continued the quest for sales and marketing knowledge, reading book after book and trying out every new technique I came across. Within another six months, I successfully raised my salary to $99,142.

Six months after that, my self-promotion skills paid off as I achieved a Director position with a new company, a sign on bonus of $20,000, a salary of $100,000 a year, a year end bonus of $20,000 and 10,000 shares of stock!

Within two years I increased my salary from $25,600 to $142,436 a year with a ton of company stock to sell at a later date!

Through intensive sales, marketing and Internet classes, as well as books and hands-on experience, I learned how to make my employers very wealthy…but more importantly I learned how to self-promote.
